What is it?

Colombian citizens have the possibility to change their name, surname or both; this is executed by public deed. Adults can only change their name once (except when the new name is because of sex change).

  • 1. What are the requirements to change the first surname (paternal)?
     

    A copy of the civil registry of birth with which a public deed of name change is requested in the notary where it was registered. After the modification of the original civil registry, a new one with a different serial will be obtained.

  • 2. Can I change my name if my parents already did it when I was a minor?
     

    Yes. The law allows a person of legal age (above 18) to change name only once (except for sex change), if the parents had already changed the name when being a minor.
